Last post had a brief overview of what all the races were up to as they spread out into the ocean, this one will cover the series of events that kicks off most of the conflict.
The Horde’s doing pretty well in the South Seas, it’s got itself set up on a few islands and Thrall and Vol’jin are on Kezan talking with the goblin Trade Princes. The Trade Princes are really fed up with Mogul Razdunk and his Venture Co. which’ve been tearing up Kalimdor, for flouting their regulations and the like. Thrall and Vol’jin want Razdunk’s old land on Kezan for the Horde, but the trade princes are hesitant to give up any territory. Vol’jin manages to talk them into it by explaining that the Zandalari have “El Dorado” levels of gold, and might be inclined to trade with the goblins if they’re able to get back on Kezan, and the goblins taper off their troll slave policies. Thrall further sweetens the deal by volunteering Horde forces to wreck Razdunks Venture Co. holdings, so the Trade Princes don’t have to carry out their ‘sanctions’ with their own bruisers and forces, and the other Trade Princes agree to turn the Venture Co. sections of Kezan over to the Horde for use as “diplomatic area’s”.
The Forsaken succeed in establishing a subtle presence on several islands off the coast of the Eastern Kingdoms, moving into troll ruins on Zul’dare and freeing the minds of the local undead at Drisburg. Due to the many Dwarven and Gnomish immigrants that had once called Drisburg home, the Forsaken are overjoyed to find many of the local workshops and factories still in working condition, and begin rapidly salvaging the machinery. On the opposite side of the ocean, Tauren explorers under Baine’s command find signs of unease in elemental spirits they encounter, but also begin speaking with several races native to the Isles of the South Seas, seeking insight into the region.
On the Alliance end of things, the various nations have all sent their representatives to Kul’Tiras, and there’s a bit of tension between a lot of the humans. Gilneas and Alterac have no representatives at the meeting, due to being isolated or effectively ‘dead’ like Lordaeron. Theramoore’s also in a bit of a rough spot since a lot of people, particularly her brother, don’t like that Jaina worked against her father back during the Founding of Durotar and was heavily involved in his death. Kul’tiras’s trade with most other nations has been suffering for several years though due to the Scourge and Naga, and it’s people are more interested in returning to prosperity through working with the other kingdoms, and eventually relent, entering into the Five Kingdoms pact with Stromgarde, Theramoore, Stormwind, and Dalaran. In secret, Calia Menethil, princess of the dead kingdom of Lordaeron and brother to the Lich King, meets with Jaina and Varian after having remained hidden in Kul’tiras for several years and seeks their counsel on dealing with the Scourge and her fallen Kingdom.
The other races of the Alliance profit from the meeting as well, members of the Kirin Tor mingle with Night Elven Highborne at the meeting and trade ancient techniques with modern advancements, while a favorable construction agreement passes between the Gnomes and Kul’Tiras, hoping that the use of Gnomish submarines may stymie naga raiding parties. Perhaps the most favorable agreement is that which passes when Moira Thaurissan manages to strike up a favorable relationship with Hilda Trollbane, wife of the late Thoras Trollbane and mother of Prince Galen who was recently murdered by forces in the Horde. In exchange for Dwarven forces and supplies, Thoradin wall will be fortified against the Forsaken, and the Thandol Span repaired. In addition an unwritten agreement to support the Dark Irons in dealing with the Wildhammers passes between them.
The two factions begin to interact as Alliance and Horde forces begin to encounter each other upon the island chains they seek to settle, and compete for trade with the wealthy Pandaren empire. Forsaken encroachment is noted in Drisburg and other areas by the Alliance, while hostile human fleets draw the ire of Horde settlers. Increasingly stormy weather, accompanied by heavy naga raiding that culminates in the siege of the Kul’tiras island of Crestfall press Varian to begin pushing for military action, and the covert assessment of Gilneas as a potential staging area for attacks against the naga. SI:7 forces in Gilneas, after circumventing the hazardous razor-reefs surrounding the peninsula known as “The Bite” find the nation in the midst of war with encroaching worgen and naga. Though Gilneas king Genn Greymane is less than happy to see Alliance forces, his son Liam accepts foreign aid in learning of the source of the Worgen, and how they manage to operate so intelligently. Dalaran Magi believe that, with Arugal dead the worgen should not be capable of being as organized as they are, and eventually discover that the Forsaken are spurring them against the isolated Kingdom using a powerful artifact known as the Scythe of Elune, which Sylvanas had several Death Knights of the old Horde retrieve as a test of their loyalty.
As tensions rise events take an explosive turn as cataclysmic earthquakes and intense storms begin to wreak havoc across the entirety of the Great Sea, volcanic eruptions push new islands from the seafloor and force older ruins to the surface aswell, while sinking, expanding or damaging others. Deathwing, the Aspect of the Black Dragonflight appears over Kezan with his flight and devastates it while taking hundreds of goblins prisoner before leaving the island in disarray. Vast armies of naga, water elementals, and undersea horrors launch assaults across the sea, taking advantage of the chaos and even laying siege to Kul’tiras itself.
The forces of the Alliance and Horde begin to launch their fleets into the stormy waters, determined to find the cause of the elemental unrest, crush the naga, unravel the mystery of Deathwing’s resurgence, and end the chaos devastating Azeroth.
